The Dematic Solution

Zimmer International Logistics GmbH (ZIL) has erected its new central distribution center for Europe, Africa and the Middle East at the Eschbach site, to the south of Freiburg. The holding, with its headquarters in Warsaw, Indiana (USA), is the world’s leading orthopedics company in research, development, production and sales of implants in the reconstructive and emergency surgery sector. ZIL is the Group subsidiary responsible for pan-European logistics.

Dematic was awarded the contract as general contractor for the new distribution center’s intralogistics. Within a period of only slightly more than six months the specialist in intralogistics, based in Eschbach, set up the world’s largest Multishuttle system – including the material flow concept, handling systems, software and specially-designed workplaces. "Everything from a single source", said Thino Baumer, Head of Logistics at ZIL.

August 2008 saw the start of the installation of hardware, material flow computer and warehouse management system along with its connection to the higher-level SAP system. In the middle of April 2009, the logistics center went online. From June to August three external stores were wound up and integrated. In the meantime, Eschbach handles 24,000 parts in the goods receiving area and 11,000 in the goods issuing area on a daily basis. Almost 1.5 million articles are in stock in the ZIL Logistics Center – the main portion of which is stored in the fully-automated Dematic Multishuttle system: The heart of the intralogistics system. Roughly 90,000 containers spaces are available in the 13 meter high, 56 meter long and 28 meter wide system. A total of 28 Dematic Multishuttle vehicles are used in the 14 aisles.
