Nestlé Nespresso is the worldwide pioneer in the production of portion-sized coffee. In recent years, sales have risen significantly and in 2006 broke through the 1 billion barrier. Further substantial growth is expected in the coming years.
Based on such strong growth predictions Nestlé Nespresso decided to invest in a new production and distribution center in Avenches, Switzerland. Dematic GmbH was commissioned to implement the logistical facilities as the general contractor in June 2007.
In a brief and intensive planning phase Dematic was able to develop an economically optimised solution in close cooperation with Nespresso and the external planner, which was then implemented in around 18 months as a new building project together with the substantially larger production center.
Secure buffering of continuous production and support for distribution over several channels. Production of the capsules and sachets is almost uninterrupted, while distribution in contrast takes place in approximately two shifts over six days. Thus the central task is clearly defined: short-term buffering of products between production and distribution. So that production is not disrupted by a backlog in storage, the facilities in the advance zone and warehouse have to be extremely reliable.
