Cluster picking increases the operator efficiency by putting several orders onto the cart. In this way the operator only walks the pick face once per group of orders. This works particularly well for products that are small, in order that the carts can take a larger number of orders simultaneously.
RF terminals and pick by voice technologies work well with pick carts. Picking accuracy is ensured by scanners attached to data terminals and check digits spoken into the voice system.
For cluster picking operations, each shipping carton shelf location can be equipped with indicator lamps and press buttons. This ensures that the picked items are placed into the correct shipping carton.
Cart picking efficiencies can in many circumstances be enhanced with a conveyor system, either routing orders between areas, or just removing picked order totes to the packing or despatch areas.
