New distribution center for maximum goods throughput
The challenge: "All orders received by 5 p.m. shipped next day." Printus has advanced being Germany’s number 1 office supplies mail order company on the strength of this claim, and the company’s success has made it necessary to build a modern logistics system. Dematic planned and installed a new distribution center, comprising one pallet store, one box store and a three-floor building for processing incoming goods and for order picking. in order to guarantee the target throughput of 3,200 cartons per hour the layout of the distribution center was individually tailored to the needs of Printus.
Our solution: Together with consulting experts Pierau Planung the customer drew up a basic layout which was then optimized in detailed simulation models. To implement the system their plan called for the selection of a prominent partner able to guarantee reliable operation in the long term and expansions in the future. two separate high-bay warehouses are used for goods storage. The first is the pallet store for bulky goods with space for 10,550 units. Storage and retrieval is implemented by five Destamat 1530 storage and retrieval machines with a load-carrying capacity of 2 x 1,000 kg. The second is an automatic small-items warehouse for 180,000 containers with 18 AKL Multistore storage and retrieval machines.
