When it comes to reducing costs and optimizing logistics operations, any suspicion of a bottleneck in a logistics system very quickly turns the focus to order-picking as a possible culprit! To date, the "bring the man to the goods" strategy in the central warehouse at the Champignon cheese dairy was being done with slips of paper. Fork-lift drivers took the order and went and got the goods from the high-bay warehouse. The first change that was made was to introduce an RFT terminal-controlled order-picking system. This improved order-picking rates while reducing the error rates. The routes taken by the fork-lift trucks were optimized at the same time - that saves time and money as well of course.
The introduction of logistics IT systems in this area meant that the control system for materials handling and the warehouse management system could be modernized and customer functions expanded.
