Optimizing the usage cycle of reusable transport containers with RFID

Supply chains between several locations or companies are being increasingly monitored electronically, e.g. with RFID tags. The same is true for the flow of goods in intralogistics, which makes an RFID solution for reusable transport items (RTIs) even more compelling. After all, the use of RTIs in production and distribution is constantly climbing.

RTIs include such containers as cases, small load carriers, kegs and bottles as well as pallets, wire mesh boxes and wheeled containers. All RTIs must be delivered on time and in good condition. If they are damaged, they must be repaired or exchanged, and if they are lost, they must be replaced. The quantity of MTIs in circulation must be kept as low as possible so as not to tie up unnecessary capital. On the other hand, there must be enough RTIs so that no disturbances in the supply chain or sales drops occur because of RTIs that are missing where they are needed.

Dematic's RFID Asset Tracking System puts the required transparency into RTI management. The following events along the entire process chain are automatically registered and saved for assessment:

  • Which RTI has passed this registration point?
  • At what time?
  • From what direction?

 Tasks of RTI asset management

These events are automatically read in the material flow process at the interfaces of one site's organizational areas, or at site interfaces themselves (e.g. incoming goods). Dematic supplies RFID antenna gates for this, together with the necessary software infrastructure, including ERP integration - ideally with the Dematic IT software suite. This includes the Asset Tracking Server as a stand-alone solution for RTI inventory management, its integration into the Dematic Warehouse Control System for controlling high-bay warehouses and their transport systems if desired, and Dematic Material Flow Control for monitoring the flow of goods and warehouse inventories.

Introduction of RFID-supported procedures for logistical control processes is very complex and must be systematically and thoroughly planned and executed. During implementation, disturbances of the contactless data exchange must be avoided. This means that the material properties of the containers must be considered and the optimal system configuration determined during the design phase by the appropriate tests. As general contractor, Dematic offers complete system solutions, including all necessary testing.

Advantages of Dematic RFID RTI management

  • Transparent inventory identification and control
  • Overview of goods-in-process and their rotational frequency
  • Tracking & Tracing
  • Registration and calculation of costs (attribution to originator)
  • Integration of all process chain participants
  • Management of cleaning and maintenance; lifecycle documentation
