E-Pedigree

Electronic Proof of Origin for Medications

One solution for preventing product imitations and piracy combines recognition of the genuineness of a medication with the reproducibility of its path through the supply chain and verification of its legality.

One economic security feature might be confirmation of the medication's authenticity through an online request to the manufacturer. Like e-pedigree, a unique identification number can be such a feature.

The requirement for this, however, is that such numbers do not follow a regular pattern but – in order to avoid twins – are taken from a large number of random numbers. If the manufacturer confirms that the code has been assigned, it can be assumed that the medication is genuine.

Even two-dimensional barcodes provide the possibility of storing large enough numbers. Barcodes, however, can be easily forged.

RFID tags, on the other hand, have benefits in this area:
  • They are technically very difficult to counterfeit
  • Every RFID tag is given a unique number by its manufacturer, the so-called "Unique-ID". Linking this number to the identification of the medication increases the latter's safety many times over
  • Encrypted information can be stored on RFID tags
  • Encrypted information can only be decrypted with the manufacturer or patient's private key
  • Data can be transmitted from tag to reader in encrypted form
  • Great reduction of time needed to record information (bulk reading possible)
