Dematic Presents new Automated Order Fulfillment-Solution for the Protein Industry

Heusenstamm, 14 July 2020 – Dematic launches a new version of an automated order fulfillment solution developed specifically for the supply chain of the protein industry. The solution automates picking, distribution and shipping, which are often labor-intensive processes. It can handle both chilled and frozen protein products (fish, poultry and meat) in a single system. Its engine is a Dematic Multishuttle system that automatically stores, buffers, sorts and sequences products for order picking and order compilation. The solution also includes a Dematic conveyor system, picking stations and optional robotic palletizing and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) for transportation. Dematic iQ software controls all logistics operations and provides tracking and accuracy, which minimises picking errors. The Dematic Automated Order Fulfilment Solution for Protein not only ensures more efficient order processing, but also provides continuous transparency in real time.

"Increasing demands in the protein industry have meant that manufacturers can no longer rely on manual order processing systems. With our solution, all order fulfillment processes can be fully automated and at the same time speed, storage density, freshness, accuracy and availability can be significantly increased," says Jessica Heinz, Head of Marketing and Business Development Dematic Central Europe. The solution is specifically designed for increasingly complex customer orders for package sizes and types as well as for shorter delivery times.

At the center of the system is a Dematic Multishuttle system, which is capable of picking several Stock Keeping Units (SKUs) from the same aisle at the same time, significantly increasing system throughput. The gripper fingers of the shuttle's telescopic arms handle a wide range of container types in a variety of temperature conditions from chilled to frozen. Multiple-deep storage and our patented Inter-Aisle-Transfer feature ensure smooth exchange of goods via different shuttle aisles, which provides for very high storage density. "The system thus enables better use of the available space and saves energy and cooling costs," says Heinz.

The Dematic Automated Order Fulfilment Solution for Protein is modular and scalable. It can be expanded to meet individual requirements or supplemented with other proven, standardised Dematic systems such as conveyor systems, picking and palletising robots and automated guided vehicles. Automation also improves the safety and ergonomics of working conditions by eliminating the need to manually handle heavy cartons in a cold work environment. Dematic iQ software controls the processes and ensures that all items can be found in real time with complete track and trace functions. The software also provides algorithms for a variety of retrieval scenarios. "Our solution delivers more efficient order processing and a competitive advantage through automation technology," Heinz sums up.
