Black Friday: Online Retailers Rely On Dematic Solutions for Peak-time Orders

Heusenstamm, 12 November 2019 – They are the biggest shopping events of the year: online retailers expect record sales again on Black Friday and Cyber Monday on November 29 and December 2. Due to extensive offers and promotions, the number of orders is exceptional-ly high on these days. Nevertheless, customers expect fast and error-free deliveries even with significantly more orders. Therefore, there is a lot of pressure on intralogistics. The volume can only be handled with reliable and flexible automation systems. With solutions from the intralogistics specialist Dematic, e-commerce retailers are optimally prepared for such peaks. This allows the Dematic Multishuttle, the pouch sorter and also the new micro-fulfillment solution to be adapted accordingly so that they can easily cover order peaks. In ad-dition to the hardware, the Dematic software ensures smooth and ful-ly automatic scaling to handle the increased order volume.

"Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the days with the highest revenues of the year for e-commerce. However, the intralogistic processes are only able to cope with the increased order situation if they are fully automatic, scalable and optimally coordinated," says Jessica Heinz, Head of Market-ing and Business Development Dematic Central Europe. For example, one of Europe's largest online fashion retailers received up to 4,200 or-ders per minute on Black Friday last year. With the pouch sorter, Dematic offers a solution especially tailored to the needs of the fashion industry. The automated hanging system on roller adapters stores and sorts both hanging and folded goods as well as flat packaged items and cartons. The article is put into the pouch and emptied automatically. The system transports up to 40,000 pouches per hour during peak times.

Experience has shown that increased order volumes are followed by an increased volume of returns. Each returned package costs up to 7.93 eu-ro, of which 70 percent can be attributed to the processing and restocking the goods. Returned articles automatically go back to the Dematic pouch sorter for buffering. In this way, promotional items are available for new requests within a very short period of time.

A significant cost and time factor in e-commerce is, in particular, the last mile. Just a few weeks ago, the intralogistics specialist launched the Dematic micro-fulfillment solution especially for this segment. Due to its extremely compact design, it is possible to install the system in urban lo-cations directly at the back of a retail store or as a separate urban fulfill-ment center. The close proximity to the end user or to its pick-up station ensures shorter distances and thus significantly reduces delivery times and costs. The solution is suitable for food and retail, for large department stores, and also for the consumer electronics, sports and the clothing in-dustries.

The Dematic Multishuttle is ideal for omni-channel companies with a wide range of products. The system automatically coordinates all pro-cesses between the warehouse, picking and packaging units. It consists of a shelving system, shuttles, lifts and the Warehouse Execution System (WES). This Dematic solution also scales with peaks: the high-speed shuttles store and unload up to 1,200 items per hour.

The basis for the Dematic systems in order to smoothly cover order spikes as are expected on Black Friday and Cyber Monday is the correct soft-ware. With the implementation of intelligent software such as the in-house Dematic iQ or a SAP-based solution, the intralogistics specialist ensures that the data flow runs smoothly even with high order volumes. Thus, manual intervention is not necessary despite the increase in or-ders. Instead, the software automatically issues commands to the hard-ware to compile the orders. A further advantage is that the processes can be simulated in advance with the help of Dematic software solutions. For this purpose, a so-called digital twin is created in advance, and it identi-fies bottlenecks in the stock or in the picking performance.
