The benefits of flexible automation

Dear Readers,

Imagine your intralogistics as an orchestra. In the past, this orchestra had to play the same piece over and over again – rigidly rehearsed, with each instrument programmed to perform a specific task. But what if the tempo suddenly changes, the audience wants a different genre, or a musician drops out? In today's dynamic business world, rigid automation is no longer enough. What we need is an ensemble that can improvise. This is where flexible automation comes into play – the neural network of modern logistics.

Flexible automation is like a highly sensitive nervous system for your internal processes. It combines modular technologies, robotics, AI, IoT and cloud-based controls to form a responsive organism. These systems detect changes, process them and respond – quickly, efficiently and precisely. Whether unexpected peaks in demand, delivery bottlenecks or staff shortages arise, instead of rebuilding the entire system, all that is needed is a software update or the addition of another robot. What used to be a major undertaking is now a matter of plug and play.

A market in transition – and on the rise again

The latest figures speak for themselves: According to VDMA and the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) the market for service robots (non-producing robots) has grown worldwide in 2023 by 30% and in intralogistics by 24%. After a stagnation in 2024, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is expected to rise above 14%, potentially surpassing 5 billion euros by 2030.

Why now?

We live in an age of uncertainty – global crises, volatile supply chains, skills shortages. Companies that rely on traditional systems risk capsizing like a rigid ship in a storm. Flexible automation, on the other hand, transforms this ship into a manoeuvrable sailing boat with modern navigation. It enables:

  • Responsiveness instead of rigidity: When markets fluctuate, your intralogistics remain capable of acting.
  • Optimisation at the touch of a button: AI-supported analyses not only improve processes, they also enable them to be continuously developed.
  • Cost efficiency through scalability: Automation does not have to be expensive – it can be tailored precisely to your needs.
  • Sustainability from the heart of the system: Resources are used more sparingly, emissions are reduced and the ecological footprint is minimised.

The key: lowering barriers to entry

Automation often feels like a steep mountain to climb, especially for small and medium-sized businesses. But today, there are many paths to the top – and not all of them are rocky. Think of a modular system: you start with a simple, mobile robot that transports goods between two stations. No major conversion, no complicated IT. As you grow, the system grows with you – modular expansion included.

Or you can opt for a rental model: no high initial investment, just monthly payments based on usage. It's like a car subscription – only this time it transports pallets instead of people.Standardised interfaces make integration easy. Cloud solutions replace expensive server landscapes. And many providers not only supply the technology, but also training, support and further education. The entry level is lower – the impact remains.

Those who think flexibly today will remain competitive tomorrow.

Flexible automation is no longer a luxury – it is a prerequisite for future viability. And it is no longer accessible only to large companies. Small and medium-sized enterprises now have more opportunities than ever to transform their intralogistics – step by step, tailor-made and with calculable risk.

Let's shape this transformation together. Not as a rigid system of cogs, but as an intelligent network. The future won't wait – but it is open to everyone who is ready to move.

Highly automated spare parts distribution centre for KION in Kahl, Germany

With its new Regional Distribution Centre Central Europe (RDC CE) in Kahl am Main, the KION Group has reached an important milestone in modern, sustainable spare parts logistics. The centre, which cost around 90 million euros, stands for automation, efficiency and excellent customer service.

Covering an area of 22,000 m², the warehouse, which was developed jointly by Linde Material Handling and Dematic, combines state-of-the-art technologies: a 30-metre-high automated high-bay warehouse, a multishuttle system with 110,000 storage locations, advanced conveyor technologyautonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and Linde industrial trucks ensure fast and precise processes.

The central location near Aschaffenburg and Heusenstamm, as well as good transport links, offer ideal conditions for reliable spare parts supply in Germany and neighbouring markets. Customers benefit from shorter delivery times and high availability.

The RDC CE also sets standards in terms of sustainability – with CO₂-free heating, photovoltaic systems, ecological compensation measures and resource-saving construction. The new warehouse is more than just a logistics location: it is a clear commitment to the future of intralogistics.

New AutoStore for French Fashion Distributor

Dematic is automating the new distribution centre of French fashion brand ERAM in Chemillé-en-Anjou. The aim is to centralise and digitise logistics processes for brands such as Gémo, ERAM, Bocage and Mellow Yellow. The 40,000 m² facility is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.

At its heart is a compact, expandable AutoStore™ system with 80,000 containers, 84 robots and 16 workstations. It enables highly automated and flexible order processing in a very small space. The system is supplemented by conveyor technology for goods receipt, parcel sorting and palletising.

Control is provided by Dematic's Warehouse Control Software (WCS), which integrates seamlessly into ERAM's IT infrastructure and ensures consistently efficient order processing. Among other things, robots take over the opening and storage of goods and forwarding of picked orders to shipping.

When was the last time you optimised your facility?

Companies are under pressure from many forces today. The market demands competitive prices and shorter delivery times, consumers want orders delivered to any location of their choice and, of course, they want their orders to be complete and on time.

In this e-book, Dematic covers the challenges facing retail, wholesale and e-commerce, the changes that these industries are going to face in the coming years and how Dematic automation solutions can help. Each of the solution strategies listed is discussed in the e-book and is assigned a point system that clearly shows you the optimisation potential for processes, staff or inventory. There are also solution examples which have been implemented around the world.

Case Study: Vitasoy embraces smart automation

More Efficiency and Sustainability

Vitasoy, a leading beverage manufacturer based in Hong Kong, is partnering with Dematic to future-proof its logistics. In response to strong competition and growing demand, the company is automating its distribution centres in Dongguan and Wuhan.

The solution includes driverless transport systems (FTFs) and a state-of-the-art automated pallet warehouse. An electric monorail system delivers packaging materials directly to production, significantly reducing manual handling and packaging waste. The FTFs operate around the clock, transporting pallets safely and swiftly from production to storage.

Dematic’s Warehouse Control System (WCS) manages operations and ensures precise real-time tracking – enabling on-time delivery to customers. Safety features minimise collisions and product damage.

With over 37,000 pallet locations in Dongguan and nearly 31,000 in Wuhan, Vitasoy is well positioned to support sustainable growth. This intelligent automation boosts efficiency and reinforces Vitasoy’s commitment to leading through innovation and sustainability.
