Interview with Franco Menezes

What site/s have you worked on as an apprentice?
I started with Dematic in my third year and spent the first half of my time with the field service team, covering a bunch of different sites around Queensland. For the last part of my apprenticeship, I was based at Teys Port of Brisbane — a residential automation site where I stayed for about six months.

Best part of the job?
Getting to work with industrial automation equipment every day — robots, conveyors, controls — it’s just cool gear. I like working with my hands and being hands-on with the tech, especially when I can see something I’ve wired, programmed or fixed come to life and do its job.

Best part about working for Dematic?
The exposure to advanced automation systems and the chance to work alongside highly skilled engineers and techs. It’s a great place to learn and grow, especially in industrial controls and Automation. On top of that, there are some really solid people here — easy to get along with, always willing to help, and just good to work with day to day.

Career goals post-apprenticeship with Dematic?
After finishing my apprenticeship, I was offered a role as a Controls Technician, which was a big step and something I really appreciated. Now I'm working towards becoming a Controls Engineer, with a focus on PLC and automation programming. I still enjoy the hands-on electrical side of the work, but my career is definitely heading more toward the programming and systems side.

The first three months of the apprentice program has been great for all participants. With the Cohort spread across three states they are forming great connections and immersing themselves into the Dematic way of life. All apprentices are showing great enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and its been a pleasure to watch them enter into a new stage in their careers. There has been very positive feedback from all supervisors and stakeholders and with all the teamwork throughout Customer Service and Human Resources, making for a seamless and well-rounded program.

The Positive Apprentice Program is the initiative that provides our apprentices with hands-on experience and job-related skills to prepare them for future career opportunities within Dematic. Through partnerships with customers and organisations, the program offers apprentices work in various areas of our business, empowering participants to achieve their career goals and contribute to the workforce.

Interview with Andrew Stuart

Andrew is a fourth-year Electrical Apprentice currently located at the Big W Distribution Centre in Hoxton Park, NSW.

Why did you choose the Dematic apprenticeship program?
I chose the Dematic apprenticeship program as I saw the opportunity to build on myself and learn in a rapidly growing industry. I observed state of the art technology Dematic was implementing, and I couldn’t turn down the chance to join the team leading the way in Supply Chain Automation.

What is your role and what do you do?
I am currently a fourth-year apprentice and my day-to-day activities vary from servicing Dematic Multishuttles and performing preventative maintenance on-site assets such as; slider beds, powered rollers, MSC aisle lifts, pallet wrappers and goods-to-person (GTP) systems.

What do you like about your job?
I enjoy the broad range of different types of assets that I get to learn about and how to perform maintenance on. I also enjoy being a part of a team where I’m always learning and being depended upon. I have a lot to learn, and this is the environment where that can happen.

How have you found the culture of Dematic so far?
I have found the culture at Dematic to be excellent as safety is of the utmost importance to me and my work colleagues. They have created an environment where I feel as if I am not judged and am able to learn at a pace suitable for me. I have found that I can ask questions and my work team are more than willing to help me improve my learning and I am very grateful for that.

The beginning of 2023 marks a new and exciting milestone for Dematic in Australia and New Zealand. This week we have welcomed 14 new Electrical Apprentices to Belrose, Australia, as they kick off their four-day induction into their new roles.

Dematic embarked on creating an Apprentice Program back in 2022, in line with goals to give back to the industry and to create skills for our future. Over one-thousand applications for the program were submitted, and after a detailed review process spanning two months, Dematic is very pleased to have offered apprenticeships to a very diverse range of individuals that demonstrate the values of Dematic; integrity, collaboration, courage and excellence.

The 2023 apprenticeship intake is made up of seven first-year apprentices, one second-year apprentice, three third-year apprentices, and two fourth-year apprentices, all with diverse experiences to share with their peers.

The apprentices have now started in their respective sites across New South Wales (NSW), Queensland (QLD), and Victoria (VIC) where they will embark on their careers working on leading-edge technology in an innovative and everchanging industry and company.
