Dematic Automates Siedle’s Logistics Center with AutoStore®

Heusenstamm / Furtwangen, 11. September 2019 – Dematic installs an AutoStore® system at the logistics center of S. Siedle & Söhne Telefon- und Telegrafenwerke OHG in Furtwangen in the Black Forest. Thus, the intralogistics specialist automates the storage and order picking of the products and components, which Siedle either delivers directly to its customers in the building communications technology field or processes them in its own production. The items can be found in a storage block consisting of 12,400 containers. Seven robots move along the surface to automatically access any container when the goods contained therein are requested. Then they transport the containers independently to the workstations, where the articles are picked and subsequently distributed for further processing in production or delivered to the customer. The installation of the AutoStore® system streamlines and accelerates processes in logistics and production. The system thus takes into account the lean production approach of the company. The start-up of the facility is planned for April next year.

"Because of the compact design, we do not need to expand our logistics center. Rather, AutoStore® adapts to the structural conditions on site," says Richard Rutschmann, Managing Director of Technology at S. Siedle & Söhne. He sees one of the biggest advantages of the system in the storage facility compressed to only 480 square meters. AutoStore® replaces the former automatic small parts warehouse at the Furtwangen site, where about 80 percent of the company's added value takes place. This has already been in use for more than 25 years. Siedle is currently investing extensively in the location.

The manufacturer of building communications was also impressed by the high reliability of the AutoStore® system: if one robot fails, another takes over its job in no time at all. "In addition to time and cost savings, we also benefit from a reduced error rate when compiling the components," says Rutschmann. Due to the high scalability of the compact goods-to-person piece goods picking system, Siedle is well equipped for the future with this solution. For example, precautions have already been taken to put two more picking ports into operation on short notice if required. In the next expansion phase, ten more robots are to be added to the ongoing operations by 2023.

Control and operation of the AutoStore® system is automatic via the Siedle warehouse management software SAP WM. To represent all functionalities, it is based on the Dematic SAP template solution. In this way, all relevant data automatically flow together into one system and ensure a smooth operation.

Furthermore, Dematic implements additional software functions at Siedle. After all, for some years the manufacturer of building communications has been relying on storage and retrieval machines and conveyor technology from Dematic, which were previously controlled by non-SAP-based software. These will be controlled by the Dematic SubSuite in the future. It is a Dematic-developed template for material flow control that is fully integrated into SAP WM. "This will unify our IT landscape and provide us with a decisive advantage for ongoing operations and the associated data evaluation," says Rutschmann.
