Heusenstamm, 19 March 2019 – Dematic automates the warehouse of the Swiss company IVF HARTMANN in Neuhausen am Rheinfall. For the provider of medical consumables, the intralogistics specialist equips the new building with 400 square meters with a fully automatic tray warehouse in combination with a Multishuttle system. The plant will be built on two levels: the new picking area will be located on the ground floor and the Multishuttle tray warehouse will be installed on the upper level. Thanks to this design, Dematic optimally utilizes the terrain of IVF HARTMANN. In addition, the previously manual storage and retrieval of goods as well as the entire material flow are now completely automated thanks to the Dematic solution. In this way, the manufacturer of medical and care products meets its demands for rapid shipment to its customers. The system will be put into operation next year.

"Our dual-level facility is the optimal solution for IVF HARTMANN AG. The storage and order picking areas are located directly above each other so that no time is lost due to complex internal transport routes," says Rainer Buchmann, CEO of Dematic Central Europe. By building on two levels, IVF HARTMANN not only increases the efficiency of its logistics processes, but also makes ideal use of local conditions. With the solution, the provider of medical consumables relies on the Dematic concept.

On the upper floor, the intralogistics specialist installs a three-aisle high-speed tray warehouse with around 10,000 container storage spaces. The automatic storage and retrieval of the goods on trays is handled by 60 Dematic Multishuttles. Using three lifter pairs, the containers are then transported to the picking area on the ground floor. Thanks to a speed of up to four meters per second, the Dematic Multishuttles can move material quickly and efficiently.

Arriving in the picking area, the goods are distributed to one of two picking stations. Subsequently, a pick-to-light system displays to the order picker the customer container into which the requested article is to be placed. "As a result, the error rate for order composition drops many times over," says Buchmann. "Thanks to the direct connection of the picking stations to the shuttle lifts, we are also able to significantly reduce the use of materials handling equipment." In addition to the two commissioning areas, the picking area also has four packing stations and two goods receiving stations. In order to connect the individual areas, a conveyor system with a total of only 290 meters is necessary.

In the planning phase, IVF HARTMANN also decided to use SAP Extended Warehouse Management software (SAP EWM) for the management of the warehouse. "With the SAP material flow solution within EWM we connect the new installation directly to the SAP system. Modifications on the control level were not necessary. The application of proven standards simplifies the system landscape as well as maintenance and service significantly," explains Buchmann.
