Atlanta, Georgia – March 16, 2020 — COIM, an Italian chemical company operating in five continents, recently completed a total renovation to automate its historic plant in Offanengo (CR), Italy. COIM relied on Dematic and STILL (both part of the KION Group) to optimize logistic operations for the distribution center (DC) inside the facility.
COIM has developed and manufactured chemical specialties since 1962. Today it is a world leader in the production of polyesters, polyols, polyurethanes and special resins used for composite materials and coatings. COIM has experienced exponential growth over the last 20 years has become a leading international company. This growth led to increased demand and the need to modernize its Offanengo facility. Today the COIM DC has over 2,900 pallet spaces operating in total automation 24 hours a day, six days a week.
“COIM is a highly successful company focused on safety of its employees and on taking care of its highly technological plants,” says Massimo Tonani, COIM Site Manager. “For this reason, we decided to entrust the development of the new distribution center to Dematic and STILL, two companies that perfectly fit our standards and meet our high expectations.”
Dematic and STILL managed the intralogistic solution from layout consultancy to system implementation of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), pallet conveyors, seismic shelving and software. The customized software control system seamlessly connects with COIM the ERP system. The Dematic and STILL teams supported the entire installation period and subsequent service contract with a highly organized network of dedicated professionals.
Dematic managed the project as a main contractor, converting the STILL two automatic MX-X VNA trucks into AGVs with software and automation systems. The AGVs were then integrated into the production site and the COIM logistics process to store and retrieve pallets to and from the conveyor system.
The solution provides multiple benefits to COIM, including:
- A significant increase in storage capacity.
- Harmonized inbound and outbound delivery time through the conveying and control system.
- Enhanced flexibility to accommodate future growth for production and shipment simply by adding another AGV.
“For this project the customer had the advantage of a single supplier, since Dematic and STILL are two companies of the KION Group and have a strong partnership,” says Aldo Lamari, STILL's Advanced Applications Area Manager in Italy. “The AGVs, pallet conveyors, anti-seismic shelving and customized software — along with field support throughout the installation period and after startup — were all elements that produced a world-class automated solution and an extraordinary winning project.”
