Urban Outfitters, Inc. is a lifestyle specialty retail company that offers its products directly to the consumer through its e-commerce websites, catalogs and stores.
Urban Outfitters expanded and upgraded its Gap, Pennsylvania distribution center which handles 28 million units per year, adding 50 percent more floor space, reconfiguring its throughput pattern, and integrating a new material handling system. The system consists of conveyor, bidirectional sorter with dual receiving/shipping functionality, and software.
Urban Outfitters, Inc., operators of the Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and Free People brands, saw increased sales and profits for the past several consecutive years.
Consequently, their distribution operations required additional capacity.
The existing sorter was replaced with a bidirectional high-rate sliding-shoe sortation system from Dematic. It handles product coming from receiving into packing, and it also handles the packed cartons leaving packing going to shipping. One side of the sorter feeds the put-to-light system, and the other side of the sorter has 16 diverts to supply the shipping doors.
The sliding shoe sorter uses software to execute high-rate, accurate package handling up to 150 cartons per minute. Interleaving extruded aluminum slats provide a wide, flat carrying surface that prevents jams. The sliding shoe sorter allows the sorting of a wide range of product sizes and types – ideal for the varied mix of products being processed at the Gap DC.
