Helukabel specializes in the manufacturing and sales of a wide variety of electrical cables. The company serves 15,000 customers worldwide, and their annual shipment capacity is 24,000 metric tons of cable.

 

Dematic provided a logistics concept which is unmatched in the industry and provides tremendous advantages for Helukabel and its 15,000 customers around the world. 

The challenge: rethinking logistics strategy 

An increasing break-down of orders into a large number of smaller orders and the associated continuous rise in manufacturing and logistics costs per order required a revision of the company’s logistics strategy.

 

Helukabel executives decided a new, centralized facility was the right solution for their needs. In addition to the challenges of effectively equipping the facility itself, the company also targeted the accelerated processing of customer orders and a simultaneous reduction of costs per order. 

The solution: an innovative approach

Initially, Helukabel engaged Dematic only to plan a new logistics solution. In this process, Dematic assessed the current status of the existing logistics concept. The significant cost savings potential of the new concept quickly became obvious during the development of a new, demand-based strategy. Dematic devised detailed plans, enabling Helukabel to initiate the bidding process.

 

Following thorough research and screening of the market, Dematic was awarded the contract to implement the overall concept as a general contractor. The implementation included a high-bay warehouse with 16,000 pallet locations and seven stacker cranes. Special handling equipment was jointly developed with Helukabel in order to simplify and accelerate the handling of the cable reels and, above all, make it safer.

This new and innovative approach to logistics at Helukabel gives them a decided advantage in the marketplace. They are able to provide same-day delivery of all orders received before 3 p.m., and they can deliver prefabricated products within 48 hours. They also now have 100 percent inventory control for residual lengths that have been returned to stock.

 

Overall, Helukabel’s order-to-delivery time was significantly reduced for all orders, while the quality of the orders delivered was also improved.
