Blum Expansion, 2006

Automation fueled by explosive growth

Blum is an Austria based global manufacturer of kitchen hardware, with U.S. operations in Stanley, North Carolina. After five years of increasing demand for Blum products, the U.S plant reached 95% capacity, making it difficult to accommodate peaks in production. Blum reassessed their manufacturing and logistics operations, and turned to Dematic as a trusted partner and solutions provider.

The challenge: increase capacity and reduce labor requirements

In 2001, Blum automated their operations with a six aisle AS/RS and unit load conveyor system from Dematic. The system was designed to support manufacturing work-in-process, and order fulfillment. The flexibility of the initial system for supporting manufacturing and distribution operations was a primary consideration for the new solution.

The solution: add AS/RS aisles, automate shipping, and upgrade IT software

To meet new capacity requirements, Blum added three more AS/RS aisles and automated the finished goods shipping operations. A new, highly customized Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), based on systems deployed in Europe , was also installed, providing better inventory control, tracking, and improved customer service.

The results are in

The three new AS/RS aisles increase total pallet positions from 12,500 to 18,000 and use the same unique design for flexible storage. This allows Blum to meet increased production and WIP requirements, and meet the increased distribution and order fulfillment requirements. Automating the shipping operations provided a chance to reduce labor requirements, provide better tracking, and provide better customer service. The integrated solution provides inventory control, tracking, and management of pallet flow throughout the system to meet the functional requirements of each operation.
