An automatic warehouse for paper reels in Spain

High storage density coupled with flexible access.

Dematic has installed a turnkey warehouse and conveyor system valued at around 13 million euros for Swedish paper producer Holmen Paper in Fuenlabrada outside Madrid. The contract covers the supply of the entire high-bay warehouse, the warehouse building, heavy-duty stacker cranes, heavy-duty conveyors, and fire protection system.

This will be the first high-bay warehouse to be installed in Spain, where paper reels weighing up to 5.5 tons will be stacked on their sides and automatically stored and retrieved without the use of any loading support device. The warehouse of a total storage capacity of 23,000 tons is 136 m long, 56 m wide and 30 m high.

Five stacker cranes are equipped with special telescopic forks to handle the heavy reels in the high-bay warehouse. The reels are transported on heavy-duty conveyors on two separate levels: reels arriving from the paper-making machines are stored on the upper level, whereas, on the lower level, reels destined for dispatch are transported to the loading bays.

The warehouse is highly flexible: it can accommodate a wide range of paper reels of different diameters and widths. The solution proposed and implemented by Dematic offers an exceptional degree of storage density coupled with rapid and flexible access to the stored stock. Paper reels can be grouped together to fill up, and fully utilize, available depth of the racks.

The high-bay warehouse is part of the expansion program for the Fuenlabrada paper mill, where, in recent months, more than 300 million euros for new paper production facilities have been invested. In this plant, newsprint paper is produced exclusively from recovered paper. Current paper production in Fuenlabrada is about 470,000 tons per year.
